Project Life 2013 - Week 5

This week, l wanted to talk about the approach l am taking with Project Life.

Project Life can be anything you want it to be.

There is enough flexibility for you to adapt it to your own situation and aims.

To me l want Project Life to be more than a photo album.  I think a time capsule is the best way of describing what l want my Project Life album to be.  I want my Project Life album to fully capture our lives, as they are now.

By definition a time capsule is
“A sealed container preserving articles and records of contemporary culture for perusal in the distant future.”

So in my Project Life album l hope to have more than a collection of photos.  I’ll be including all sorts of things that provide the broader context of our lives.

In this week’s layout there are a few examples……

1.     A significant weather event.  This week the North Coast of NSW had a visit from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.  I included a 6x4 journaling card on the event and our experience.

2.     What tv shows we are watching.  This week marked the return of a number of my favourite tv shows, so I included a 3x4 card on them. Unlike any other aspect of contemporary culture, don’t you think tv shows capture a place in time perfectly?

3.     Newspaper feature on contemporary events.   The flooding of the Clarence River was a major highlight of the week, and in particular whether the Grafton levee would hold.  In this week’s layout l have included a pictorial feature from the local newspaper.

4.     Bills and other everyday paraphernalia.  Apart from the weather, another big part of our week was our dog, Max, having an operation to remove a malignant tumour.  In another two inserts I included his discharge notes and the bill !

Till next week ……

  1. I like your P/L approach. I do P/L as a monthly re-cap but I may follow Ali Edwards lead & do a spread about a day in the life - maybe quarterly rather than monthly as she is doing. I keep track of the weather on a daily basis but include the significant weather station shot - we had an extreme cold alert a few weeks back (-32 (C) with wind). When I have an event to record but no photo I have used stickers to help tell the story, helps with the stash of stuff (lol). Hope that Max is doing ok since his surgery.

    1. Thanks Mary Lou – nice to see you again!
For the past two years l have also done a monthly re-cap, but in a digital photobook. I really like how achievable that approach is, and that you are actually doing something with the photos you take!
I too saw Ali’s new project, and did a day in the life on Friday. Just need to get the photos and journaling into a suitable format so l can include it in my album.
Thanks for asking about Max, he’s recovering well as dogs tend to do :-)

  2. I love your PL philosophy. Time Capsule is the perfect thing to call it. I feel that way too. Some weeks I'm better than others about including things like current events and weather.

    1. Thanks Margie – and welcome!
I really do feel that along with our everyday photographs, capturing what the world is like around us (tv shows, music, current events etc) will create the perfect record of our lives now.

  3. Thanks for giving tips each week. I'm awful about including news and weather. Love the idea of including tv shows...I think it might be fun to include what my kiddos like to watch too :o)
